Mexico Secures $9 Billion in Bonds Despite Rising Public Debt Concerns
The Mexican Secretariat of Finance announced the successful placement of $9 billion in bonds, despite indications that public debt has doubled over the past decade. On December 30, Hacienda reported that public sector financial requirements would close at 52.4%, resulting from responsible fiscal policy and optimized maturities, with an economy projected to grow below estimates.
Mexico’s Strong International Credit
Luis Miguel González, editorial director of El Economista, highlighted that even amidst severe economic crises, Mexico has continued to meet its external debt obligations. However, global disorder could create unnecessary pressures.
Health Policy Adjustments
David Kersenobich, head of the SSA, is gradually implementing adjustments to public health policy as dictated by reality. He aims to rectify the shortcomings inherited from the previous administration.
On January 6, Kersenobich announced that Dr. Víctor Hugo Borja replaced Dr. Armida Zúñiga as the director of the Federal Commission for Protection against Health Risks (Cofepris) to advance institutional modernization.
Crime Organizations Challenge the Government
The assassination of entrepreneur Alberto Prieto Valencia in Zapopan, Jalisco, on December 29 should prompt those who refuse to acknowledge the control of criminal organizations over many communities in Mexico to reconsider.
More than 30 armed assassins and at least seven vehicles participated in the direct attack on Prieto Valencia, despite his six bodyguards. The gunfight lasted nearly 20 minutes, resulting in Prieto Valencia’s, his young daughter, and one bodyguard’s deaths.
The CJNG targeted Prieto Valencia because they can and should shake off those who refuse to accept that displacing criminal organizations from communities where they serve as parallel governments will take time and cost much bloodshed.
