Introduction to Nick Cassidy and Formula E
Neo-Zealand born racing driver Nick Cassidy recently secured a remarkable victory in the Formula E series, winning the ePrix 2026 at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez in Mexico City. This win not only marked his first victory for the Citroen team but also catapulted him to the top of the drivers’ championship with 40 points.
The Mexico City ePrix 2026
On January 10, during the ePrix 2026 in Mexico City, Cassidy clinched a hat-trick of achievements: victory in the main race, leading the points classification, and joining an elite group of drivers with multiple wins in Formula E history.
Cassidy’s winning time of 49:25:393 at the Hermanos Rodríguez circuit also signified Citroen’s maiden victory in the series. In post-race comments, the 31-year-old expressed his delight and gratitude, stating, “It’s a dream start to the year for the team, and I’m very happy to be here and have won. I feel fortunate to be part of such a competitive series with so many talented drivers.”
Nick Cassidy’s Racing Journey
Cassidy’s passion for motorsport began at the tender age of six, with karting. He honed his skills in various series, including Formula First in New Zealand, the Toyota Racing Series, Fórmula 3 in Europe, Super Formula, and Super GT in Japan. He made his Formula E debut in the 2020-21 season and has since amassed an impressive record of 27 podium finishes, 7 pole positions, and 12 race wins.
Cassidy ranks third in the all-time list of Formula E winners, behind Swiss driver Sebastien Buemi (14 wins), fellow Neo-Zealander Mitch Evans (13 wins), and Brazilian Lucas Di Grassi (13 wins). He now shares this position with British driver Sam Bird and Portuguese racer Antonio Félix Da Costa.
Formula E in Mexico City
The Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez hosted the 150th race of Formula E this weekend, with packed grandstands in the stadium area. The FIA-backed electric car racing series is currently in its 12th season, with Mexico City hosting at least one race annually since its inception.
Cassidy’s best result in Mexico City prior to his 2026 victory was third place in 2024, the same year he set the fastest lap. As Citroen’s lone representative from France, his triumph marked the team’s inaugural win in Mexico. The previous New Zealand-born Formula E winner in Mexico was Mitch Evans, who secured victory in 2020.
“During the Valencia tests, I felt very comfortable in the car, and today in Mexico City, everything went much better than in Sao Paulo. We still need to improve some aspects, but we’re on the right track,” Cassidy commented.
Formula E Season 2025-26 Overview
With only two races completed in the 2025-26 Formula E season, Cassidy’s Mexico City victory propelled him to the top of the drivers’ championship with 40 points. Jake Dennis (Andretti) follows closely with 36 points, while Oliver Rowland (Nissan) holds third place with 34 points.
Cassidy’s success has bolstered Citroen’s confidence, which joined Formula E only this season. His teammate, French driver Jean-Éric Vergne (champion in 2017-18 and 2018-19), serves as an additional motivation.
Three drivers—Dan Ticktum (Cupra Kiro), Antonio Félix Da Costa (Jaguar TCS), and Nyck De Vries (Mahindra)—failed to finish the main race in Mexico City 2026. Notably, De Vries has Formula 1 experience.
Swiss driver Sebastien Buemi (Envision) underperformed, dropping from securing the pole position (tying the series record of 17) to finishing 17th in the main race.
The 2025-26 Formula E season comprises 17 races. The next event takes place on January 31 in Miami, with British driver Oliver Rowland defending the drivers’ championship title.
