About Salón Acme and its Significance

Salón Acme is a crucial project within the annual Art Week, which consistently turns its traditional venue in Mexico City’s Colonia Juárez into a major success. For over a decade, Salón Acme has played a vital role in the artistic hierarchy of Mexico and Latin America, helping numerous artists gain visibility on increasingly international platforms with ambitious artistic proposals.

Enrique López Llamas: From Salón Acme to Global Recognition

One such artist is Enrique López Llamas (Aguascalientes, 1993), who began his journey at Salón Acme and has since risen to prominence, returning this year as an invited guest to curate the “Patio” section. This section occupies the central courtyard of the building on General Prim, engaging in dialogue with architecture, patina, and the layers of time left by the building itself.

López Llamas’ work, titled “I Am the Resurrection and I am the Life,” represents an introspective and ambitious shift, merging painting and sculpture to explore the body and identity as products of a complex and oppressive social context. Through floating and pictographic sculptures, the artist presents a fragmented portrait of identity as vulnerable and uncertain, prompting reflection on the possibility of resistance and the power of community against cultural standardization and exploitation.

Details of Edición 13

The details were announced on Wednesday during a press conference led by Salón Acme’s co-founders, Paula Amor, Álvaro Ugarte, Sebastián Vizcaíno, and Zazil Barba. Edición 13 will take place from February 5-8 at the Colonia Juárez venue, with Puebla as the invited state and a selection of 82 artistic works chosen from approximately 1,800 applicants.

Puebla’s Presence and New Application

Álvaro Ugarte highlighted Puebla’s significant presence, with a curated exhibition by Italian Nina Fiocco titled “Huellas, voces y otras pistas.” This showcase features 18 artists from all generations, including the work of Roberto Rugerio, a late mentor to several Puebla-based artists and part of the “Poblano Boom” in art.

Ugarte also announced that the exhibition will be moved to Puebla City for an extended display after its Acme stint. Additionally, Salón Acme will be included in the AlwaysArt app alongside Material and Zona Maco, allowing users to access information about each fair, artist profiles, technical descriptions, and explanations of the works.

Key Themes in Edición 13

The selected works predominantly feature artisanal and textile pieces, addressing recurring themes such as territory, minerals, and seismic movements. The co-founders also noted an emphasis on productivity, work from economic and production perspectives, as well as emotional and health-related aspects.

When asked about artists addressing topics like artificial intelligence or political tensions, both in the region and Europe, Zazil Barba acknowledged the presence of AI since last year, sometimes as a collaborator and other times as a theme. Although still in its infancy, AI is permeating various aspects of life, including the arts and shaping our perspectives.

Barba expressed a desire for more focus on global political situations, noting the scarcity of overtly political or critical stances among artists. Instead, she observed artists seeking alternative ways to imagine possible futures while subtly addressing current issues.

Complementary Activities and International Collaboration

Alongside the main program, Casa Margarita will host complementary activities such as poetry recitals and book presentations. Salón Acme will also partner with Material for a program of professional art visitor exchanges, featuring prominent cultural figures from London, Berlin, Los Angeles, and other global art capitals.
