Querétaro to Host the Global Wine Tourism Summit in 2027

Querétaro, Qro. The state of Querétaro will be the host of the World Wine Tourism Summit 2027, an event coordinated by the World Wine Tourism Organization (OMET), according to an announcement made during the International Tourism Fair (FITUR) in Madrid, Spain. The Querétaro Secretariat of Tourism confirmed this through a press release.

Economic Impact of Wine Tourism in Querétaro

At the state level, wine tourism generates an economic impact of 4,000 million pesos annually. This is due to the fact that this niche attracts 1.5 million visitors each year to wineries, vineyards, cellars, and communities.

OMET’s Mission and Querétaro’s Role

José Antonio Vidal, president of OMET, stated that global summits aim to position emerging destinations on the international wine tourism map and strengthen established ones. During the announcement of the 2027 summit, Querétaro’s Secretary of Tourism, Adriana Vega Vázquez Mellado, explained that wine tourism involves producers, communities, academia, and government.

The designation of Querétaro as the host presents an opportunity to share experiences, reinforce international cooperation, and position Mexico on the global stage of responsible wine tourism.

Previous and Upcoming Summit Hosts

The past summit hosts include Punta del Este, Maldonado, Uruguay (2024), Yantai, Shandong, China (2025), Beja, Alentejo, Portugal (May 31 – June 3, 2026), and Querétaro (Mexico) in the following year.

During the announcement of the Mexican host, the state’s Secretariat of Tourism acknowledged the work of the Querétaro Wine Cluster and the contributions of producers, enologists, and service providers in the sector.

Querétaro’s Viticultural Region

Querétaro features a viticultural region primarily located in the semi-desert area, though its presence is also documented in municipalities within the metropolitan area. In early 2025, the Mexican Intellectual Property Institute (IMPI) under the Secretariat of Economy granted the Protected Geographical Indication (IGP) to Querétaro’s wine region.

The IGP distinguishes the characteristics and qualities of wine produced in Querétaro. It serves as a sign for products originating from a specific location with a reputation solely attributed to that site. As the southernmost wine region in the northern hemisphere, it is recognized as an extreme viticulture zone. Of Querétaro’s 18 municipalities, eight are wine producers.
