President Gustavo Petro to Visit China and Sign Letter of Intent
Colombia’s President Gustavo Petro announced his upcoming trip to China next week to sign a letter of intent for formal entry into the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). However, he clarified that this development would take place during the subsequent government.
Petro’s Stance on China and Trade Relations
During a public event at the Palacio de Nariño, Petro addressed 4,000 SENA trainees to rally support for the upcoming Referendum. He stated, “I am going to sign the Belt and Road Initiative’s letter of intent. We will speak on equal terms; I won’t kneel down. We’ll address current issues: Why does China have a trade surplus while Colombia faces a $14 billion annual deficit? This leads to poverty, and I don’t want China to be the cause of it.”
Petro further emphasized, “As the head of state, I aim to maintain good relations with the United States. Colombia’s choice depends on the best proposal in any bidding process, whether it’s from the U.S. or China.” He added, “I am entering an intention agreement now. The next government will decide if this intention turns into reality, and it must.”
Beneficiaries and Concerns of the Belt and Road Initiative
The Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) is an ambitious project led by China, aiming to strengthen economic ties with Europe, Asia, Africa, and Latin America. While the initiative promises investments, trade, and new routes, concerns remain about its genuine impact on participating countries.
Currently, 146 nations are part of this project, with 23 from Latin America. Colombia has yet to officially join, but discussions have progressed since last year.
Ingrid Chaves, Executive Director of the Colombia-China Investment and Trade Chamber, believes that joining the Belt and Road Initiative will “bring numerous opportunities to increase Colombia-China trade figures.” María Claudia Lacouture, President of AmCham Colombia, expresses concerns about the lack of clear results in other participating countries, growing trade deficits with China exceeding $13 billion, and the risk of unfair competition.
