Project Overview and Investment Details

Tren Maya SA de CV, a subsidiary of Grupo Aeroportuario, Ferroviario, de Servicios Auxiliares y Conexos, Olmeca-Maya-Mexica (Gafsacomm), has submitted two infrastructure projects in Quintana Roo for environmental assessment by the Mexican Secretariat of Environment and Natural Resources (Semarnat).

The combined investment for these projects amounts to 8,168 million pesos in public funding.

Libramiento Vial Cancún Sur

The first project, named “Libramiento Vial Cancún Sur,” aims to extend Avenida Huayacán, connecting the federal highway 180 (Cancún-Aeropuerto) directly with federal highway 307 (Cancún-Playa del Carmen) and the new Multimodal Freight Rail Station.

This road will also have a branch leading to the Tren Maya Freight Cargo Station, currently under construction. The project is expected to stimulate local economic growth by enhancing the mobility of goods and people, encouraging investments in logistics, commercial, and tourism sectors, and solidifying the region’s position as a crucial connectivity hub in southeastern Mexico.

The project will impact 68.512 hectares (685,120.00 m²) of Middle Subperennial Shrubland in its primary and secondary states. The Right of Way (ROW) will span 15,394 kilometers, covering a projected area of 115.023 hectares.

The road will have a crown width of 39.00 meters and include three lanes per direction.

The primary objective of this expansion and modernization is to optimize traffic flows by reducing congestion and travel times, as well as improving the efficiency of intercity transit operations.

The project is expected to take 18 months, with the construction scheduled to begin in mid-2025 and conclude by the end of 2026. However, the actual timeline may shift depending on the project’s commencement, which is now anticipated to start by mid-2023 or late 2023.

Freight Terminal

The second project involves the construction of a freight terminal for Tren Maya, which will affect approximately 47.8150 hectares of vegetation within a total project area of 101.4623 ha in the Othón P. Blanco municipality.

The site is located in the southwestern part of Othón P. Blanco, parallel to the Chetumal-Cancún federal highway 307, roughly 900 meters west of it. The nearest town is Xul-Ha, located 2 kilometers south, and Bacalar, 10 kilometers away.

The terminal will include facilities for crew accommodation, a tetrahedral antenna, gasoline dispatch, washing area, public warehouse, access roads, ferroviary and vehicle access control booth, construction foundations, transformer room, customs building, maintenance workshop parking, National Guard station, welcome wall, administrative office, maneuver yard, potabilization plant, intermodal platform, territorial reserve, hazardous waste area, car maintenance workshop, diesel and gasoline tanks, information kiosk, public road, and inspection vial.

This terminal aims to improve regional connectivity and logistics, integrating with the Tren Maya project, a key initiative for regional development connecting productive and tourism areas in the states of Chiapas, Tabasco, Campeche, Yucatán, and Quintana Roo.

It will facilitate more efficient access to national and international markets, enabling faster merchandise transportation and reducing delivery times.
