The Crème de la Musical Scene Gathers for the 68th Annual Grammy Awards

Los Ángeles – The crème de la musical scene descended upon Los Ángeles for the 68th Annual Grammy Awards, held at the Crypto.com Stage. Kendrick Lamar, Bad Bunny, and Lady Gaga kicked off the event with early victories in various categories.

Kendrick Lamar’s Triumphant Start

Kendrick Lamar opened the televised ceremony by claiming the first Grammy of the night for his album “GNX,” which was awarded Best Rap Album. Humbly accepting the trophy, Lamar remarked, “I’m not good at talking about myself, but I express myself through music. It’s an honor to be here.”

Early Wins for Bad Bunny, Lady Gaga, and Kendrick Lamar

Earlier in the pre-show, where most awards are presented, Bad Bunny won Best Latin Pop or Urban Song for “EoO,” a single from his acclaimed album “DeBÍ TiRAR MáS FOToS.” Lady Gaga claimed Best Dance/Electronic Pop Recording for “Abracadabra,” and Kendrick Lamar secured three awards in the rap categories.

Olivia Dean was named Best New Artist, a prestigious category that has previously propelled the careers of artists like Olivia Rodrigo and Billie Eilish.

Opening Performances

Rosé and Bruno Mars kicked off the gala with an energetic rock rendition of their viral hit “APT.” Comedian Trevor Noah, hosting his sixth and final ceremony, opened with an animated monologue, introducing several stars present at the Crypto.com Stage and subtly poking fun at rapper Nicki Minaj’s absence due to her support for former President Donald Trump.

Key Artists and Performances

Sabrina Carpenter followed with a performance of her summer anthem “Mainchild,” setting the stage for upcoming performances by Lady Gaga, Lauryn Hill, and Justin Bieber. The evening also included a tribute to the late rock icon Ozzy Osbourne.

Album of the Year Contenders

Kendrick Lamar’s Quest for the Elusive Album of the Year

Lamar, who dominated last year’s awards with five Grammys, returns this year with nine nominations and hopes to win the coveted Album of the Year trophy for the first time. His successful album “GNX” and its single “Luther,” featuring SZA, have placed him in the three most significant categories: Recording, Song, and Album of the Year.

Despite his 22-Grammy collection, including a Pulitzer Prize, Lamar still lacks the Album of the Year title.

Stiff Competition

Bad Bunny, the Puerto Rican sensation responsible for globalizing reggaeton, seems unstoppable. His 2022 album “Un verano sin ti” became the first entirely Spanish-language contender for Album of the Year by the Recording Academy. Now, he’s a strong contender in all three major categories with his highly-praised “DeBÍ TiRAR MáS FOToS,” including the nostalgic single “DtMF.”

“It was a very emotional album,” music critic Lauron Kehrer told AFP. “It tackled many themes and musical styles, including addressing decolonization and incorporating traditional Puerto Rican music into mainstream audiences.”

Bad Bunny’s highly-anticipated Super Bowl halftime show on February 8 in California has further fueled excitement amidst a divided United States regarding immigration policies.

Lady Gaga’s Strong Contender

The shape-shifting Lady Gaga made a triumphant return to the scene with “Mayhem,” earning her seven Grammy nominations. Her catchy “Abracadabra” is a strong contender for Song of the Year, but faces stiff competition from Sabrina Carpenter’s “Manchild” and “Golden,” the standout track from Netflix’s animated film “Las guerreras K-pop.”

“Abracadabra” previously won Best Music Video at the pre-show, solidifying its position as a frontrunner.
