“As we approach the Joint Review of T-MEC, this action plan is a significant step toward strengthening bilateral cooperation,” the statement added.
EU and Japan Collaboration
For the European Union and Japan, the United States’ two major trading partners, the goal is to reach a memorandum of understanding within 30 days.
The United States, in collaboration with Mexico, the EU, and Japan, will identify critical minerals of interest and minimum import prices.
Senator Marco Rubio highlighted Argentina’s role as a key ally of Washington in Latin America and the Caribbean during the ministerial meeting.
“Argentina not only has the natural resources (…) but also possesses the processing capabilities, which will be critically important,” said the U.S. Secretary of State in a press conference.
China’s Global Dominance
China dominates the global production and processing of these natural resources. Last year, China attempted to introduce export restrictions on rare earth elements unexpectedly, prompting a swift threat of additional tariffs from Trump. The crisis was resolved through negotiations between the two powers.
