Background on Measles and its Recent Spike

The Pan American Health Organization (OPS) has issued a new epidemiological alert regarding measles in the Americas due to a recent increase in cases. Measles, a highly contagious viral illness, has been making a comeback in several countries across the region.

Measles Cases on the Rise

In the first three weeks of 2026, there were an additional 1,031 confirmed measles cases across seven countries: Bolivia, Canada, Chile, the United States, Guatemala, Mexico, and Uruguay. This figure represents a 43-fold increase compared to the 23 cases reported during the same period in 2025.

According to OPS, out of the confirmed cases with available information, 78% were unvaccinated, and in 11%, the vaccination history was unknown.

Demographic Distribution of Measles Cases

Although the majority of cases have been reported among adolescents and young adults, the highest incidence rates were observed in infants under one year of age, followed by children aged 1 to 4 years and 5 to 9 years. This underscores the importance of ensuring complete vaccination schemes.

Measles Crisis in Mexico

Mexico is currently facing a critical measles crisis at the start of 2026. According to the latest data from Mexico’s Secretaría de Salud up to February 3, there have been a total of 8,332 cases reported nationwide since the outbreak began last year.

Growing Concerns and Fatalities

The situation has escalated from prevention to emergency as authorities confirmed the first measles-related death in Michoacán. This adds to the 25 fatalities reported in 2025, bringing the total number of deaths during the current outbreak period to 26.

The virus is currently active in 32 regions across the country, with Chihuahua, Jalisco, Chiapas, and Sinaloa reporting the highest incidences.

OPS Recommendations and Call to Action

In response to this alarming situation, OPS urges countries in the Americas to intensify epidemiological surveillance, vaccination efforts, and rapid response to outbreaks to interrupt transmission and safeguard vulnerable populations.
