Overview and Background

Querétaro, a central Mexican state known for its thriving automotive industry, has faced a three-month slump in new vehicle sales from February to April. According to the Querétaro State Automobile Distributors Association (AMDA), April saw an 8.3% drop in new car sales compared to the same month last year, while March recorded a -5.6% change and February showed a mere -0.5%. However, January had shown growth with a 6.4% increase in sales.

Reasons for the Decline

Laura Rodríguez Miranda, the president of AMDA in Querétaro, attributes these declines to two primary factors: uncertainty caused by the US tariff announcements and consumers prioritizing spending on family vacations during the Easter break in April.

“These have been very challenging months with a decline in the number of sales. The factors I consider relevant for this decline are, of course, the tariff issue that has caused instability and uncertainty among consumers. Additionally, the Easter vacations in April may have led consumers to prioritize spending on family trips rather than new vehicles,” Rodríguez Miranda explained.

Sales Figures and Market Composition

In April, 2,567 new vehicles were sold, marking a decrease of 231 units compared to April 2022 when 2,798 vehicles were sold. Over the first four months of 2025, Querétaro reported a 1.8% decrease in new vehicle sales, with 6,437 (56.6%) being heavy-duty vehicles and 4,937 (43.4%) being passenger cars.

Querétaro accounted for 2.4% of the nation’s total vehicle sales during this period, ranking it 11th among Mexico’s 32 states. The majority of sales were channeled through local agencies in Querétaro, Corregidora, El Marqués, San Juan del Río, and Huimilpan, with some sales also reported in non-conurbated municipalities.

Outlook for May

Despite the recent downturn, Rodríguez Miranda remains optimistic about an improvement in new vehicle sales during May. “I am hopeful that May will be a better month, as we have experienced three consecutive difficult months. We are looking forward to seeing some improvement in sales,” she stated.
