Overview of Violent Crimes in Mexico City

In the first four months of 2025, Mexico City witnessed its most violent period since at least 2021, with 316 victims of deliberate homicide. This figure represents an 8.8% increase compared to the same period in 2021, which saw 347 cases.

Deliberate Homicides

According to the Executive Secretariat of the National Public Security System, most deliberate homicides in 2025 were committed using firearms, with 250 victims. Accidental injuries grew by 26.8% in 2025, with 1,880 victims compared to 1,482 in 2021. Although traffic accident-related injuries dropped from 1,170 to 1,310, injuries caused by other elements rose from 312 to 570.

Femicides

There was a 59% decrease in femicides, from 27 victims in 2021 to just 11 in 2025. However, concerning factors remain: although no firearm-related homicides were reported this year, four women were killed using sharp weapons, and one with other objects, while six cases lacked method specification.

Crimes Against Personal Liberty

There were 542 victims of crimes against personal liberty in 2025, a 34.5% decrease from 827 in 2021. Despite this overall reduction, extortion-related kidnappings showed a worrying increase: 28 cases were documented this year compared to 12 in 2021, a 133% rise. Of these, 27 were extortion kidnappings, while only three were reported in 2021.
