Understanding the Hot Sale and Its Risks

The much-anticipated Hot Sale, Mexico’s largest e-commerce discount season, kicks off on May 26th. This year, over 700 companies will participate, with expectations of surpassing the 70 million consumers who shopped during this period in 2024. From footwear to medical insurance, the Hot Sale offers enticing discounts on a wide range of products and services. However, online shopping also brings significant risks for consumers.

Isabel Manjarrez, a security researcher at Kaspersky, emphasizes the importance of online shopping safety. According to Kaspersky’s cybersecurity data, 24% of Mexican online shoppers have experienced some form of incident during transactions.

Identifying Fraudulent Websites

Fraudulent websites can mimic legitimate platforms like Amazon or department store websites. However, closer inspection reveals telltale signs of illegitimacy.

  • URL Inspection: Manjarrez advises checking the URL for misspellings, shortened links, excessive length, or unusual domain extensions (e.g.,.top,.xyz) instead of the standard.com or.mx.
  • Content Analysis: Fraudulent websites often have low-quality images, poorly written product descriptions with spelling errors, and unnatural language.
  • Contact Information Verification: Ensure the website provides genuine contact details, including phone numbers and physical addresses. Test these contacts to confirm they lead to a real person or location.
  • Unrealistic Offers and Payment Methods: Be cautious of excessively low prices, limited-time offers, and websites that only accept uncommon payment methods like wire transfers or cryptocurrencies.

Responding to Cyber Fraud

Common cyber fraud tactics include phishing and smishing. In 2024, Kaspersky reported 118 million phishing attacks in Mexico. If you become a victim, swift action is crucial.

  • Contact Your Bank: Inform your bank about the situation so they can secure your account.
  • Change Passwords: Update passwords for important accounts to prevent unauthorized access.
  • Device Security: If your device is infected, restart it and consult a specialist for a thorough check.

Staying Safe During Hot Sale

To avoid falling prey to online scams during the Hot Sale, experts recommend the following:

  • Install Antivirus Software: Protect your devices with reliable antivirus programs or browser extensions that flag and alert you about potentially dangerous websites.
  • Avoid Suspicious Offers: Be wary of exaggerated discounts received through text messages, emails, or social media.
