Introduction

Universities should ideally be sanctuaries of free thought, where diverse ideas can flourish without the constraints of dogmatic beliefs. Recently, figures like Donald Trump and JD Vance, along with President Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO), have attempted to impose their ideologies on academic institutions, viewing free thought as a threat to authoritarian mindsets.

AMLO’s Criticism of Mexican Universities

AMLO specifically targeted the UNAM, CIDE, and ITAM, aiming to create a nation of mediocrity fueled by his Orwellian/pro-morning worldview.

During a recent visit to ITAM, I encountered intellectual giants in the humanities department, including Carlos de la Isla, Rodolfo Vázquez, Ramón Zorrilla, Alberto Sauret, and Julián Meza. These scholars are part of the Estudios Generales department, which focuses on subjects oscillating between philosophy (Ideas) and sociology (Problemas). In the 1980s, ITAM was known for its yellow-covered Estudios Generales books, symbolizing a positive outlook and multiple opportunities, aligning with the opening of borders through free trade agreements and democracy under President Zedillo.

Former ITAM rector Javier Beristain recognized that the institution’s prestige should not solely stem from Economics; a transversal vector, Estudios Generales, was essential for comprehensive student development.

Challenges Facing ITAM

Despite its rich history, ITAM has faced challenges under AMLO’s presidency. A group of students voiced concerns about the academic burden, and while suicides among students have been reported, their causes are multifaceted and cannot be attributed solely to teacher expectations.

Internal weaknesses within ITAM’s authorities, possibly stemming from arrogance and a loss of focus on the institution’s mission, have also contributed to its decline. The question of whether ITAM should prioritize research over education has emerged.

Small issues can gradually erode the foundations of educational institutions.

The Role of Long-Term Leadership

Arturo Fernández’s 33-year tenure as rector has undoubtedly shaped ITAM, but prolonged leadership—more than 7 or perhaps 10 years—is not conducive to a healthy university environment. Similarly, José Ramón Benito and Carlos McCadden’s continued presence in Estudios Generales, along with Vice-Rector Alejandro Hernández’s over a decade in his position, raises concerns about stagnation and the need for fresh perspectives.

The passing of Alberto Bailleres, ITAM’s founder, compels his son Alejandro to reassess the institution’s direction.

Personal Reflections

My time as both a student and professor at ITAM has been memorable. I hope the institution can soon navigate its current challenges and emerge stronger.
