Background on Autotraffic and Its Role in Puebla

Autotraffic, a company specializing in traffic management solutions, has been awarded the contract to continue its photo-speed enforcement program in Puebla, Mexico until 2027. This decision comes after the Secretaría de Planeación, Finanzas y Administración (SPFA) reviewed bids from multiple companies, including Autotraffic, Engintra, DGSO México, In Syc Move, Intercproof, and Cargo Movit.

Autotraffic’s Previous Involvement

Autotraffic initially began operating the photo-speed enforcement program in Puebla during Rafael Moreno Valle Rosas’ six-year term. However, the partnership was temporarily halted when Miguel Barbosa took office and selected Intecproof as the new provider. Under Sergio Salomón Céspedes’ administration, Autotraffic was reinstated as the photo-speed enforcement service provider.

Details of the Extended Contract

As part of the extended contract, Autotraffic is committed to installing 80 additional radar speed cameras across various highways in Puebla. These highways include the Ecological Periphery that spans six municipalities, Atlixcáyotl road between Puebla and San Andrés Cholula, the Cholula straight road, the Mexico-Puebla freeway in an urban section, and the Siglo XXI freeway.

Increased Revenue and Safety Measures

In 2024, Autotraffic’s photo-speed enforcement program generated Mexican pesos 310.7 million in revenue, a figure that the company aims to increase by installing more speed-reading cameras along the designated 70, 80, 90, and 110 km/h zones.

SPFA head Josefina Morales Guerrero highlighted that revenue has also risen due to two programs aimed at helping drivers who have incurred fines to become compliant with reduced penalties.

Impact on Traffic Safety

The photo-speed enforcement program has significantly reduced traffic accidents on Puebla’s highways, according to Morales Guerrero. As the new contract progresses, Autotraffic will be responsible for installing cameras to detect illegal turns and drivers using mobile phones while operating vehicles.

It’s essential to note that the program’s primary objective is not revenue generation but ensuring drivers adhere to speed limits, thus preventing excessive speeding and related accidents. Consequently, non-compliant drivers will face penalties, and authorities aim to maintain low accident and fatality rates in the designated zones.
