Security Measures for Upcoming Judicial Elections
Omar García Harfuch, the Secretary of Security and Citizen Protection (SSPC), met with members of the Political Coordination Board in the Chamber of Deputies to discuss security arrangements for the upcoming judicial elections.
Harfuch announced that elements of the National Guard will be deployed to ensure a safe voting process on June 1st. He mentioned that there are currently 3,500 National Guard members in Veracruz and 2,500 in Durango, with plans to further strengthen their presence to guarantee peaceful elections.
Addressing Potential Disruptions
Harfuch addressed concerns regarding possible disruptions by the National Coordination of Education Workers (CNTE) aiming to boycott the elections. He emphasized that the government under President Claudia Sheinbaum will not engage in any provocations or acts of repression.
“As President Claudia Sheinbaum has stated, we prevent, not provoke or engage in repression. Of course, we will ensure the well-being of citizens, just as the Metropolitan Police of Mexico City has done with remarkable restraint in recent days, and we will continue to do so,” Harfuch said.
No Link Between CDMX Officials’ Murders and Gómez Leyva Attack
In a separate matter, Harfuch dismissed any connection between the murders of two Mexico City government officials and the attacks he and journalist Ciro Gómez Leyva faced in 2020 and 2022, respectively.
“Given that this is an ongoing investigation, I prefer not to speculate. There is currently no indication linking these incidents to the attacks we or Ciro Gómez Leyva experienced. They are separate cases, and there is no evidence connecting them at this time,” Harfuch clarified.
He further assured the public that investigations are thorough and professional, promising results and assistance to the Fiscal General de Justicia in the City of Mexico as needed.
Discussion Topics During Meeting
Ricardo Monreal Ávila, President of the Jucopo and coordinator of Morena’s Group in the Chamber of Deputies, reported that Harfuch discussed various sensitive topics during his presentation, including relations with the United States and operational consequences.
