Introduction to the Plan México and its Significance
Under the Plan México, President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo brokered a voluntary agreement to increase national content, meaning more promotion of ‘Made in Mexico’ products across retail stores, departmental stores, pharmacies, discount stores, and digital commerce platforms.
Key Participants in the Agreement
Among the participating corporate giants are major retail chains, which have committed to raising their national content by 20% (from 50% to 70%) and departmental store chains, which aim to increase their national content by 12% (from 30% to 42%).
Prominent Companies Supporting ‘Made in Mexico’
Walmart – Made in Mexico
On February 24, Walmart de México joined the ‘Made in Mexico’ initiative, displaying this graphic symbol across its nearly 3,200 stores nationwide.
Walmart expressed its desire to be the first retail company to actively support this campaign, demonstrating action rather than mere rhetoric. Nearly three months later, Walmart reaffirmed its commitment to promoting domestically produced goods and supporting the economic well-being of Mexican families.
Amazon – Made in Mexico
On May 7, Amazon decided to back the ‘Made in Mexico’ program and boost the export of national small and medium enterprises (SMEs).
Through its Mexican subsidiary, the US-based e-commerce giant endorsed the government-led initiative by Claudia Sheinbaum aimed at strengthening the national industry and positioning Mexico’s economy among the world’s top ten.
“Focusing on ‘Made in Mexico’ products and exporting them globally is an absolute priority for us, not just for this year but for past and future years,” stated Pedro Huerta, Country Manager of Amazon Mexico.
OXXO – Made in Mexico
Hailing from Monterrey, Nuevo León, OXXO has long championed ‘Made in Mexico,’ particularly on a regional basis, such as ‘Hecho en Yucatán’ or ‘Hecho en Sonora.’ This strategy has positioned OXXO among the top 10 most valuable Mexican brands, according to the Kantar BrandZ 2025 ranking.
