Background on Acapulco and its Importance

Acapulco, a renowned Mexican beach resort city, has been facing challenges due to the impact of hurricanes Otis and John. The city’s revitalization is crucial for both local development and tourism, making it a significant focus for the Mexican government.

Federal Support through SHCP and Fonatur

The Secretaría de Hacienda y Crédito Público (SHCP) has allocated an additional 260.7 million pesos to the Secretaría de Turismo’s budget during the first quarter of 2023. This support comes through the Fondo Nacional de Fomento al Turismo (Fonatur) to enhance Acapulco’s infrastructure.

Key Programs and Their Objectives

Two main programs have been identified to support Acapulco’s transformation:

  • Acapulco se Transforma Contigo: Led by President Claudia Sheinbaum, this program aims to create favorable conditions for local development and tourism through infrastructure improvements.
  • Adquisiciones de vehículos de transporte y carga: This program focuses on acquiring vehicles for maintenance and conservation within the Centro Integralmente Planeado (CIP) Acapulco, including various types of trucks, waste collection vehicles, and more.

Infrastructure Improvement Projects

The primary project, “Intervención de mantenimiento de infraestructura básica y turística, equipamiento urbano y turístico Acapulco se Transforma Contigo,” requires a total of 4,965.5 million pesos. By the end of the first quarter, 144.1 million pesos have been allocated to initiate necessary works.

These improvements include:

  • Upgrading public lighting infrastructure
  • Improving access to beaches and maintaining public beach areas
  • Rehabilitating roadways

These enhancements are expected to significantly improve the quality of life, safety, and positive perception of Acapulco as a tourist destination, paving the way for sustainable development.

Visit from President of Mexico

During a recent working visit, the President of Mexico highlighted the proposal by Fonatur’s director, Lyndia Quiroz, to establish a Centro Integralmente Planeado (CIP) Acapulco. This initiative aims to improve the city affected by hurricanes Otis and John, drawing inspiration from a successful model previously implemented in Cancún.

Quiroz’s efforts extend beyond infrastructure, as she personally oversees the dignification of Acapulco’s commerce and works closely with local vendors to support their development.

Preparations for Hosting Tianguis Turístico

With Acapulco set to host the 50th edition of Tianguis Turístico next year, the Secretaría de Turismo (SECTUR), led by Josefina Rodríguez, requested resources from SHCP for various investment programs. Although these requests were not included in the annual budget of 1,774.8 million pesos, SECTUR has already started receiving funds to commence the necessary work.
