Background on Coparmex and its Relevance

The Confederation of Mexican Employers’ Organizations, or Coparmex, is a prominent business organization in Mexico representing various sectors of the private industry. Comprising small, medium, and large businesses, Coparmex plays a crucial role in shaping Mexico’s economic policies and advocating for business interests. As such, its recommendations carry significant weight in the country.

US Protectionist Policies and Their Impact on Mexico

Edmundo Enciso, president of Coparmex’s Nearshoring and Foreign Trade Commission in Mexico City, warns that the protectionist measures taken by the United States compel Mexico to reassess its trade policy. The imposition of tariffs on steel, the automotive sector, and agricultural products has already caused devastating effects on North American value chains. Combined with stricter immigration policies and mass deportations of Mexican workers, these actions are destabilizing entire communities, reducing remittances, and causing local job losses.

“The very core of our economy is being affected,” Enciso asserts, as the export sector and remittance flow, which accounted for over 17% of Mexico’s GDP in 2024, are declining.

Unilateral and Punitive US Trade Policy

According to an analysis by a customs agent, the United States’ trade policy has become increasingly unilateral and punitive. The structural weakening of the US economy, along with the rise of BRICS nations as a global counterbalance, has been highlighted by economist Richard Wolff. Wolff predicts the decline of US global dominance, as BRICS+ countries (Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, and Indonesia) now represent over 50% of the world’s population and 35% of global GDP, surpassing the G7.

These emerging powers offer investment, infrastructure, and financing conditions that genuinely compete with traditional Western-dominated institutions, according to Wolff.

Coparmex’s Proposed Strategy for Mexico

In response to these challenges, Coparmex proposes a national trade strategy with a geostrategic vision based on five key areas to reposition Mexico in the new global economic order:

  • Diversification of Trade Partners: Strengthening ties with Asia, Africa, and Latin America.
  • Active Industrial Policy: Promoting regional clusters, value chains, and quality employment.
  • Leveraging Nearshoring: Utilizing modern logistics infrastructure and competitive tax policies.
