Collaborative Effort in Vehicle Development, Supply Chain, and Clean Energy Technologies
In a strategic partnership, General Motors (GM) and Hyundai have announced plans to jointly develop and manufacture five vehicles targeting the Americas by 2028. This collaboration, agreed upon in September 2024, aims to leverage both companies’ strengths and scale to reduce costs and deliver a broader range of vehicles and technologies to customers more rapidly amidst ongoing tariff wars.
Vehicle Lineup
- Four vehicles for Central and South America:
- A compact SUV
- A compact sedan
- A compact pickup truck
- A medium-sized pickup truck
- One electric vehicle for North America:
- An electric commercial van
Leadership and Responsibilities
GM will lead the development of the medium-sized pickup truck’s platform, while Hyundai will handle compact vehicles and the electric van. Although they will share common platforms, each brand’s interior and exterior design will be exclusive to reflect their unique identities.
Design, Engineering, and Launch
The design and engineering work for vehicles destined for Central and South America will commence immediately, with a planned launch in 2028. The electric commercial van will also be manufactured in the United States that same year.
Broader Collaboration Opportunities
Beyond vehicle development, GM and Hyundai will explore potential collaborations in areas such as:
- Joint development and production of passenger and commercial vehicles
- Combustion engine technology
- Clean energy, electric, and hydrogen technologies
- Combined procurement opportunities in areas like battery materials, steel, and other components
Executive Statements
“This strategic collaboration with GM will enable us to continue offering value and options to our customers across various segments and markets,” said José Muñoz, President and CEO of Hyundai Motor Company.
“Our combined scale in North and South America will allow us to better respond to customer demands with attractive, high-quality vehicles that prioritize safety and relevant technology,” Muñoz added.
“This alliance will provide our customers with more vehicle options, faster and at a lower cost,” stated Shilpan Amin, Senior Vice President and Global Lead of Purchasing and Supply Chain at GM.
“These initial jointly developed vehicles clearly demonstrate how we will leverage our complementary strengths and combined scale to deliver benefits for both companies,” Amin concluded.
