Key Players Announce Collaboration at GSMA M360 LATAM
Altán Redes, América Móvil, AT&T México, and Telefónica México have launched the GSMA Open Gateway initiative in Mexico, enabling new business opportunities and partnerships with other industries by opening their networks for innovation and collaboration.
What is GSMA Open Gateway?
GSMA Open Gateway is a standard that allows mobile network operators to provide developers with various network functions for creating applications and services. This initiative simplifies and accelerates innovation for developers while enhancing a more seamless and secure experience for mobile users.
How does it work?
Through Interfaces of Application Programming (APIs), GSMA Open Gateway functions as an entry point to network capabilities information. These APIs are available via CAMARA, a GSMA and Linux Foundation open-source project, enabling developers to integrate them directly into their applications.
Focus on Digital Security APIs
Globally, the initial phase of GSMA Open Gateway has concentrated on digital security APIs. In line with this trend, the three APIs presented in Mexico are:
- SIM SWAP: Verifies if a SIM card was recently swapped.
- Device Location: Provides the current location of a device.
- Number Verification: Confirms that a phone number is associated with a specific device.
These APIs deliver crucial real-time information to detect and prevent fraud in financial payments and transactions, enhancing user security. Sectors like banking and Fintech are the primary potential clients for this new business line for operators.
Impact and Growth
Alejandro Adamowicz, GSMA’s Technology and Strategy Director for Latin America, stated: “The involvement of the four Mexican operators ensures the necessary scale for GSMA Open Gateway to be commercially attractive, allowing all Mexican users access to new, more secure, and reliable applications. With this implementation, Latin America solidifies its position as a leading region in the global GSMA Open Gateway map.”
Since its launch at MWC Barcelona 2023, over 73 mobile operator groups, representing 284 mobile networks and nearly 80% of global mobile connections, have joined GSMA Open Gateway alongside many leading global technology companies.
In Latin America, Argentina, Brazil, Chile, and Peru have already presented their initial API portfolios, with more markets expected to join by 2025.
