Mexico’s Commitment to Pragmatic Leadership
On Friday, Mexico’s Secretariat of Foreign Affairs, Secretariat of Economy, and Secretariat of Finance and Public Credit announced that Mexico has assumed the Presidency Pro Tempore (PPT) of the Pacific Alliance.
This move, according to the three government bodies, reaffirms Mexico’s dedication to the mechanism and regional integration that effectively address social, economic, commercial, and environmental challenges faced by Latin America.
Pragmatic Approach and Measurable Results
During its presidency, the Mexican government stated it will promote a pragmatic management approach focused on tangible and measurable results, ensuring regional cooperation translates into concrete benefits for the populations of member countries.
“This vision will strengthen the Alianza del Pacífico’s capacity for action and impact, adhering to its open, flexible, and consensus-based nature,” the government communicated in a press release.
Strengthening Strategic Relationships
Mexico plans to redefine the alliance’s external relations strategy, enhancing cooperation with observer states and strategic partners. This will involve pooling technical, financial, and institutional capabilities in high-value projects to solidify the Pacific Alliance as an effective platform for cooperation and international projection.
Prioritizing Existing Commitments
The Mexican presidency aims to provide more substance, coherence, and operability to existing documents, roadmaps, and commitments of the alliance. This will prioritize their effective implementation, ensuring they meet current regional needs and shared sustainable development goals.
Expanding the Alliance
Mexico reiterates its commitment to continue efforts towards Costa Rica’s adhesion as a member state and Singapore’s incorporation as an associated state, believing a more robust, diverse, and globally connected alliance enhances its global influence.
Comprehensive Agenda for the Year
Mexico will promote a comprehensive agenda reflecting a broad vision of development and well-being. Priorities will include youth, gender equality and inclusion, the environment, education, and culture—central components of a more inclusive integration centered on people.
Financial Focus
In the financial realm, Mexico will prioritize strengthening inclusive and innovative finance, promoting sustainable finances, managing climate risks, and funding productive investment and industrial development. Special attention will be given to micro, small, and medium enterprises’ access to capital markets and financing schemes that foster economic resilience.
Economic-Commercial Priorities
In the economic and commercial sphere, Mexico will prioritize global sectors such as semiconductors, automotive and aerospace, medical devices, electromobility, rare earths, among others. This will mark a new phase of attracting strategic investments, particularly in logistics infrastructure, digital connectivity, and strengthening SMEs through the relocation of production chains as engines of growth, competitiveness, and job creation.
