Panama Canal Expands Beyond Ship Transit
The Panama Canal is preparing to expand its business model beyond ship transit by investing in strategic projects such as developing a gas pipeline as part of an energy corridor and resuming port construction projects to enhance logistical capacity, according to Panama Canal Authority Administrator Ricaurte Vásquez.
New Projects for a Sustainable Future
During the new board of directors’ assumption ceremony at the Maritime Chamber of Panama, Vásquez announced, “We must respond to the needs of global maritime trade, as we did with the expansion. It is our duty to generate increasing resources for social investment in Panama.”
Vásquez further elaborated on three key projects: “We will have more water for citizens and transport combustibles without using the transoceanic route, as well as provide more ports to the world.” These projects include the Indio River dam, the energy corridor, and new port terminal constructions.
A New Era of Logistical Development
Vásquez highlighted that, following over two decades of successful Panamanian management, it is time to move towards a new phase of logistical development. Last week, La República reported that the Panama City-based newspaper, La Prensa, revealed that the Panama Canal is advancing in preparations to build a gas pipeline with the aim of capitalizing on the global growth of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) and other hydrocarbons trade.
This initiative seeks to diversify the logistical and transportation services offered by the interoceanic route.
