Introduction

In the first half of 2025, major corporations, including telecommunications companies, have faced significant cyber incidents. Telecom businesses are now a prime target for cybercriminals due to their management of critical infrastructure supporting public, financial, and governmental services, including traditional mobile internet, voice, and data networks.

Reasons for Increased Attacks

Telecom companies store millions of IMSI records, SIM keys, metadata, and location data, making them attractive targets. Additionally, their role as digital backbones positions them as strategic points for attacks targeting third parties. Fausto Escobar, a cybersecurity specialist and HD Latin America’s General Manager, highlighted these reasons.

Latin America has seen a 108% increase in attacks on telecom operators compared to the previous year, with over 2,600 incidents per organization weekly.

Mexico, Colombia, and Brazil lead in the volume and sophistication of threats.

Primary Attack Vectors

Phishing, ransomware, and data theft are the main attack vectors against telecom operators.

Recommended Security Measures

To protect telecom companies, a robust prevention strategy is essential. This includes strict identity verification for each access, role-based network segmentation, and multi-factor authentication (MFA) for employees, customers, and vendors.

  • Implement sandboxing and behavior analysis
  • Monitor deep web and social networks using tools like SOCRadar
  • Regularly scan infrastructure and APIs, especially in 5G networks and open banking environments
  • Conduct attack simulations and assess operational resilience

Fausto Escobar also emphasized the importance of continuous awareness programs on phishing, social engineering, and identity impersonation, along with internal simulations.

Additional support includes encrypted and automated backups, incident response plans, critical service segmentation, and geographical redundancy.

“Cybersecurity in telecommunications has evolved from a technical necessity to a strategic business decision, reputation, and survival issue. In the 2025 Latin American landscape, telecom companies that recognize this urgency will build resilient digital ecosystems.” – Fausto Escobar
