Jorge Castellanos, Intermoda President, Sees Opportunity Amidst Challenges

The ongoing trade tensions between the United States and China have created a significant opportunity for Mexico’s textile and footwear industry, according to Jorge Castellanos, president of Intermoda. The reactivation of Mexico’s manufacturing capacity is seen as a positive development.

Mexico’s Prominence in Denim Exports

Castellanos highlighted Mexico’s position as one of the leading exporters of denim pants to the US market, with this segment experiencing substantial growth in shipments. He described the current scenario as “optimistic.”

Growing Demand and Foreign Interest

In recent months, there has been a surge in demand for Mexican manufacturing services and increased interest from foreign companies in finished textile products made in Mexico. Companies from the UK, US, Canada, and Central America have shown interest.

Focus on Quality and Design

Castellanos emphasized that international companies are not seeking low prices but rather quality and design. Many Mexican products, when produced, attain high value addition, which is what global buyers are looking for.

Challenges Posed by Asian Competition

Despite the opportunities, Castellanos acknowledged that Mexico’s textile and footwear industry still faces significant challenges due to the influx of low-priced Asian products. This has affected domestic manufacturers.

Government Initiatives and Aranceles

The federal government’s initiative to impose temporary tariffs on textiles and footwear from countries without a trade agreement with Mexico, such as China, has been welcomed by Castellanos. He expressed hope for the proposed increase in tariffs up to 50%.

Addressing Internal Demand

Following the federal government’s 25% tariff on Asian footwear, manufacturers in Guanajuato now face the challenge of meeting growing domestic demand previously satisfied by imported products.

Collaboration for National Production Strengthening

Castellanos hinted at the National Clothing Industry Chamber (CANAIVE)’s efforts to negotiate with the government for national production enhancement. Although specifics were not provided, he mentioned that “something great” is being cooked up for the industry.

Looking Ahead

Castellanos concluded that the industry is at a critical juncture. He urged creativity and quality over low pricing, emphasizing that Mexico can emerge stronger from this period of challenges.
