Background on the Union Leader and Relevance

Hugo Tlalpan Luna assumed the role of Secretary-General of the Sindicato Independiente de Trabajadores de Volkswagen de México (SITIAVW) in January 2024, and will serve until 2028. Despite his leadership, the union has faced challenges in maintaining unity among its more than 7,000 members. The workers have raised strong concerns, including questioning the increased number of positions within the workforce.

Financial Issues and Lack of Transparency

According to Alberto Romero, the Treasurer of SITIAVW, the union is currently facing a deficit of 1,866,301 pesos. Moreover, audits conducted after the previous administration revealed a 40-million-peso gap. The union’s financial report was presented without providing copies to each worker, only inviting them to consult with the secretaries if they had doubts. This lack of transparency has raised concerns about the union’s operations.

Salary Negotiation and Worker Concerns

As the union prepares for salary negotiations in 2025, demanding a 14% increase from the German company Volkswagen, Hugo Tlalpan claims that this figure stems from recent divisional assemblies where workers advocate for better raises.

However, worker concerns persist regarding the increased number of positions within the workforce and the lack of information about new openings.

IMSS, Infonavit Payments and Financial Management

The union’s treasury allocated 2,303,000 pesos to cover IMSS and Infonavit payments for the sixth quarter of 2023. While these obligations have been met, the union’s failure to file declarations with the SAT from 2020 to 2024 has raised questions about its financial management.

Golf Model Production Return to Mexico

Hugo Tlalpan announced that, following a recent trip to Germany by the Executive Committee, Volkswagen will resume Golf model assembly in its Puebla facilities. Tlalpan acknowledged the role of Mexico’s skilled and creative workforce in bringing the Golf model back to Puebla.

He emphasized the importance of maintaining stability amidst trade-related uncertainties and government policies, expressing confidence in navigating these challenges.
