Overview of Mexico’s Economic Performance in June 2025

The Mexican economy experienced a modest expansion of 0.2% in June 2025, primarily driven by the dynamism of the services sector, according to the latest report from Mexico’s National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI).

Monthly Growth Surpasses May’s Performance

The Indicador Global de la Actividad Económica (IGAE), which tracks Mexico’s economic performance on a monthly basis, reported a 0.2% growth in June compared to the previous month. This figure is slightly higher than May’s 0.1% growth.

On an annual basis, the economic growth in June was 0.9%, up from May’s 0.6%.

Moderate Growth and Government Targets

Since last year, Mexico has seen moderate economic growth, raising questions about whether the government’s estimated growth target of 1.5 to 2.3% set by Claudia Sheinbaum’s administration can be achieved.

However, analysts and organizations have different growth estimates. For instance, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) predicts a 0.4% GDP growth this year, while the Citi Encuesta de Expectativas forecasts a 0.3% growth.

Services Sector Takes the Lead

According to INEGI’s report, the monthly advance was mainly due to the performance of tertiary activities, or the services sector in Mexico.

The services sector showed a monthly growth of 0.3% after a similar decline in the previous month.

  • Positive Performers: Among the services, recreational cultural and sports activities demonstrated better economic performance with a 1.5% monthly growth.
  • Declining Sectors: In contrast, financial and insurance services fell by 1.1% monthly in June.

Primary and Secondary Activities Contract

INEGI’s report also indicated that primary and secondary activities experienced monthly contractions in June.

  • Primary Activities: This sector, which includes livestock, fishing, hunting, agriculture, and similar activities, reported a 0.1% monthly contraction after growing by 2.9% in the previous month.
  • Secondary Activities: The industrial sector also experienced a 0.1% monthly decline compared to May, with mining industry activities showing the most significant economic contraction at 1.4%.
