Understanding Power Posing and Its Impact on Workplace Creativity

Stressors like traffic, illness, or excessive workload can cause individuals to feel “small,” characterized by hunched posture, tense shoulders, a clenched jaw, and lowered gaze. These physical manifestations not only reflect personal feelings but also mirror the work environment within organizations.

Specifically, a positive work atmosphere is often reflected in employees’ body language, with noticeable power posing. In such settings, individuals walk confidently, display trustworthy facial expressions, and even sit differently.

Amy Cuddy: The Concept of Power Posing

Social psychologist Amy Cuddy explained during her World Business Forum Mexico (Wobi) speech that power posing involves feeling more comfortable, warmer, and capable of making decisions. She emphasized that success and empowerment lead to expansion.

Why Power Posing is Absent in Organizations

Although individuals possess varying levels of power posing, a negative work environment erodes confidence. Cuddy explained that this occurs because power has been formalized, focusing on hierarchy and controlling others, leading to obedience and fear.

As a result, leaders attempting to assert power through fear and control only diminish their subordinates’ power posing, stifling creativity and innovation due to fear of reprimand.

Tips for Personal Empowerment

To connect with others through power posing rather than control, it’s crucial to convey this via body language. A genuine smile, for instance, can make others feel more confident.

  • Speak with a harmonious rhythm: Slowing down your speech when anxious or nervous can project more confidence.
  • Posture matters: Adopting a relaxed, upright posture signals confidence. Expansive poses before creative tasks can enhance idea generation.
  • Walk with confidence: Relaxed body movements, proper posture, and avoiding downward gaze can positively impact mood.

The World is Shrinking

Despite efforts to feel empowered, a global factor negatively impacts individuals. In recent years, there has been an increase in hostile, insecure, and even aggressive attitudes.

A primary cause is bullying, both personally and professionally. Insecure individuals resort to threats as a defense mechanism, creating a hostile environment that hinders talented individuals from performing at their best.
