Global E-commerce Revolution and Mexico’s Role
In a year marked by global economic, political, and geopolitical challenges, the e-commerce sector has strengthened, with Mexico maintaining its position as a significant player. Pierre Claude-Blaise, the executive director of the Mexican Association of Online Sales (AMVO), highlighted this growth during his speech at eRetail Day Mexico 2025.
Claude-Blaise pointed out that there are over three billion online shoppers worldwide, accounting for 50% of the global population. Moreover, 75% of internet users engage in digital purchases.
If e-commerce were a country, it would be the third-largest global economy, just behind the United States and China, with six trillion dollars in sales. However, it is not a country and is growing at twice the average global GDP growth rate.
E-commerce in Latin America
Although e-commerce represents only 3% of global retail trade in Latin America, its growth is accelerating, even surpassing the leading countries—the United States and China.
“We are small, but we’re growing faster, and we have more online shoppers in the region. We are talking about 300 million people shopping online annually, more than in the United States and Europe combined.”
Mexico’s E-commerce Potential
According to Claude-Blaise, Mexico plays a crucial role in Latin America, accounting for 15.8% of retail sales and consistently ranking among the top five countries with the highest e-commerce growth for eight consecutive years.
Several factors are driving e-commerce in Mexico: increased internet penetration, middle-class access to online shopping, financial inclusion, and more.
Mexico is an economic powerhouse in e-commerce, thanks to its population and per capita GDP, placing it uniquely on the global stage.
Claude-Blaise emphasized that e-commerce is one of the most dynamic industries in the country, expected to grow significantly over the next five to ten years. However, this growth will only happen with “good public policies,” continued investment in e-commerce, creation of new economic solutions, and professionalization of Mexican talent.
AI as an Ally for E-commerce
Meanwhile, Marcos Pueyrredon, president of eCommerce Institute, stressed the importance of using Regenerative Artificial Intelligence. Although various companies have already implemented AI, its adoption needs to be accelerated.
Pueyrredon explained that consumers desire a positive user experience, and businesses need to generate this experience by understanding when, how, and why AI works.
This approach will enable better technology and data utilization, providing a superior customer experience and boosting sales.
