Preparations for Mother’s Day Boost Flower Shops
As May 10, Mother’s Day, approaches, flower shops in Mexico City are gearing up for a significant sales increase of up to 80%. Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) like Florería Leo, located in the Jamaica market, are already preparing for this high-demand period.
Popular Mother’s Day Bouquets
Ana Zúñiga, owner of Florería Leo, promotes bouquets called “buchones,” which feature numerous roses and metallic butterflies or crowns, targeting the “queen of the house.” The price range for these arrangements is between 500 and 1,000 pesos, with an average investment of 700 pesos per floral arrangement.
Increased Demand and Preparations
According to the Agroalimentaria y Pesquera Information Service (Siap), Mother’s Day and Valentine’s Day are the peak seasons for flower sales. YouGov also highlights that flowers are among the top-preferred gifts for mothers, following clothing and jewelry.
Araceli González Cansino, owner of Florería Cancino’s in the Roma Sur neighborhood, explains that preparing for Mother’s Day takes about a month. She buys materials gradually to assemble the arrangements and places orders with flower suppliers to reserve a portion of the flower harvest.
“This week is crazy,” Araceli says, “Many farmers have already delivered their flower orders since Monday. Lilies, for example, take a week to bloom and will be open by Saturday. Other flowers like roses bloom quickly, especially with the heat.”
Orchids Gain Popularity as Gifts
While roses remain popular, orchids are gaining traction as a gift option. César Gutiérrez of Florería Atelier notes that consumers are interested in giving plants that can regrow and last longer at home, creating their own mini-ecosystem.
Orchids are imported from Holland, and preparations begin in December. White and purple orchids are the most sought-after, with an average cost of 300 pesos, though prices can vary based on the number of branches and flowers.
Online Sales and Delivery Platforms
These SMEs have embraced social media, their websites, and delivery platforms to market their products. However, online sales only account for about 10% of total revenue on average. Florería Leo restricts deliveries during peak seasons due to high demand, while Florería Cancino’s and Atelier leverage online platforms and websites to boost sales.
