Introduction to Mercado Pago Terminals and Their Impact

In Mexico, more than one million small businesses, including tienditas, markets, hardware stores, cafes, and local shops, now use Mercado Pago terminals to transform their sales processes and business management. These point-of-sale (POS) devices have significantly impacted the way micro, small, and medium enterprises (mipymes) conduct their transactions.

Sales Growth and Average Ticket

Businesses utilizing Mercado Pago terminals have experienced a sales increase of up to 30%, with an average transaction amount of approximately 450 pesos.

Mercado Pago’s Growth and Market Position

The widespread adoption of these terminals has positioned Mercado Pago as the leading payment aggregator in Mexico, demonstrating a 100% growth rate over the past year. The company now boasts a network comparable to the total number of active bank terminals, which is around 1.4 million, according to the Comisión Nacional Bancaria y de Valores (CNBV).

“Achieving over a million active terminals is more than just a milestone; it means that more than one million businesses across Mexico are taking significant steps towards digitalization and professionalization. We have doubled our network in just one year and now compete directly with traditional banking, proving that technology can open real opportunities for businesses that previously lacked access to these tools,” said Enrique Horcasitas, Director of pymes at Mercado Pago.

Access to Financing through Terminals

Mercado Pago terminals not only facilitate transactions but also open doors to financing for mipymes. After a few months of using the terminals, many businesses receive credit offers to finance inventory or working capital.

To date, the platform has granted over 2.5 million credits to more than 400,000 mipymes across the country.

Moreover, the integrated POS software enables businesses to track inventory, cash flow, sales, and invoicing, thereby facilitating the professionalization of daily operations.

Reaching Unserved Small Businesses

Mercado Pago terminals are present in all 32 Mexican states, with a higher concentration in the Greater Mexico City area, Estado de México, Jalisco, Nuevo León, and Guanajuato. Approximately 60% of the deployed devices are Smart terminals, which can print receipts and offer advanced management features.

The impact is evident in local businesses that previously operated solely on cash. Now, they can diversify their payment methods and integrate into the digital ecosystem, gaining access to credit and management tools that were previously out of reach.

Benefits for Consumers and Merchants

For consumers, Mercado Pago terminals mean faster and more secure payments. For merchants, these devices offer the opportunity to increase sales and move towards formalization and digitalization.
