Background on Remittances and Their Importance

Remittances are crucial financial support for many families in Mexico, with millions relying on funds sent by relatives working in the United States. These transfers play a significant role in the Mexican economy, contributing to household income and fueling local businesses. Zapp, a WhatsApp-based remittance platform, recently conducted a survey to analyze December’s remittance trends.

Survey Findings: Increased Remittances in December

According to Zapp’s survey, Mexican families will receive substantial financial assistance from their relatives in the U.S. during December. Here are some key findings:

  • 56% of the remittances being sent this month will exceed those sent throughout the year.
  • 41% of respondents plan to send the same amount as in previous months.
  • Only 3% expect to send less money than usual.

Moreover, four out of ten interviewees will send over $700, making December the most significant month for remittance transfers. If confirmed, this would nearly double the average remittance captured in Mexico during 2025 and surpass the $416 average monthly transfer recorded in July of this year.

Context and Challenges

José Luis Orozco, CEO and co-founder of Zapp, explained that this increase in sending intentions occurred amidst a complex context. Factors like inflation, reduced purchasing power, and economic uncertainty in the U.S. have pressured remittance growth.

Of the 154 Zapp users surveyed, 40% intended to use remittances for daily expenses, while 35% planned to send enough for Christmas gifts. Only 24% expected funds for home improvements, and 21% anticipated medical expense coverage.

Orozco emphasized that remittances symbolize a form of presence and care for families, even when migrants work far from home.

Importance of Sending Money During the Holidays

The survey revealed that 81% of participants view sending money during this period as very important. Qualitative responses highlighted themes like health, well-being, unity, and prosperity.

Shift in Remittance Habits

Zapp’s survey also uncovered a change in remittance habits, with 48% preferring WhatsApp over traditional methods like bank transfers or in-store money transfers.

“Rapidity, simplicity, and clarity of the process” were cited as reasons for choosing this method.

Impact of the 1% Remittance Tax

Valerie Angelkos, Zapp’s spokesperson, anticipates an increase in their service usage due to the upcoming 1% tax on remittances sent from the U.S.

“This tax applies only to cash-in-hand transfers and specific physical instruments, like money orders or checks. It is not a general tax on all remittances but a targeted measure,” she explained.

Zapp’s operations won’t be negatively affected, as they don’t accept cash transfers. All transactions are made via debit or credit cards, or bank transfers, so the tax won’t increase fees for users or alter their service model.
