The Mexican Baking Industry’s Outlook for Rosca de Reyes

The National Chamber of the Baking Industry and Similar Industries in Mexico (CANAINPA) anticipates a production of over 9,400 tonnes of Rosca de Reyes, with sales potentially surpassing 3 billion pesos.

CANAINPA highlighted that this volume confirms the Rosca de Reyes as one of the traditions with a significant impact on family economies and over 55,000 bakeries nationwide.

A 200-Year-Old Tradition

“The Rosca de Reyes tradition has been around for more than 200 years and in Mexico for 70 to 90 years, blending history, innovation, and the world’s best sweet bread,” stated Julián Castañón, president of CANAINPA.

Sales Growth in Major Retail Chains

For large retail chains, sales are expected to maintain a sustained growth rate during this season due to increased product diversity and demand inherent to this tradition.

Soriana’s Sales Expectations

Soriana expects Rosca de Reyes sales to grow by double digits, similar to last year, driven by early commercialization, increased product diversity, and shifts in Mexican family consumption habits.

Soriana explained that the highest sales and production levels occur on January 5th and 6th, with the Mexico City Metropolitan Area, Monterrey, Tijuana, and Guadalajara traditionally showing higher consumption during this celebration.

“We’ve noticed that Mexicans are starting the season earlier, seeking greater variety and open to exploring new flavors,” assured Soriana’s commercial director, Gabriel Baldini.

Popular Rosca de Reyes Variations

Filled roscas continue to be the consumers’ favorite, while the line with “premium attributes,” such as porcelain nativity scenes, enhances the customer experience.

  • Pricing: Prices vary according to size and filling type. The medium traditional presentation sells for 169 pesos, while filled versions (with raspberry, cream, or Hershey’s) for 10 and 12 people are available at 420 pesos.
  • Individual Portions: Individual portions range from 19.90 to 29.90 pesos, as per Soriana’s website information.
  • Collaborations: Soriana offers filled roscas developed in partnership with brands like Kit Kat, La Lechera, Mazapán De La Rosa, Hershey’s, and Queso Philadelphia.
  • Flavors and Nativity Collections: Options include flavors like dulce de leche, hazelnut chocolate, cream cheese, and raspberry. Additionally, they integrate a collection of 13 hand-painted porcelain nativity figures.

Workforce and Production

For this season, Soriana has over 7,000 employees preparing the roscas daily across their 779 stores nationwide.
