The Incident

On Sunday, a man suffering from mental health issues stabbed nine people, including four adults and five children, in Paramaribo, the capital of Surinam. He also seriously injured another daughter, 16, and a 72-year-old neighbor. The attacker, 48, attempted to assault the police officers and was shot in the leg during his arrest.

Victims and Their Relationship to the Attacker

According to local authorities, four of the victims were the attacker’s children. The other victims were neighbors who came to help. The minister of Justice and Police, Harish Monorath, mentioned that some victims were neighbors who “offered help and paid with their lives.”

Mental Health Background

Local news outlets spoke with residents of Commewijne, a district east of Paramaribo. They reported that the man had mental health issues.

The school director, where the attacker’s children were enrolled, stated that the man seemed unwell during recent school events like “Parents’ Day,” but he still brought his children to school. The police chief mentioned that the suspect had contacted them a year prior regarding domestic violence, and the situation seemed to calm down afterward.

Reactions and Support

Suriname’s president, Jennifer Geerlings-Simons, expressed her sorrow on social media.

“In a time when families should support each other, we face the harsh reality that the world can be different. A father takes the lives of his own children and also kills his neighbors,” she said.

The Surinamese government will provide “professional assistance” to the victims’ families and cover funeral expenses, according to an official statement.

Government officials visited the area to meet with the bereaved families. Minister Monorath urged the community to support the affected families, emphasizing that help should extend beyond family and neighbors to workplaces, schools, and the entire district.

Dick Schoof, Prime Minister of the Netherlands (Surinam’s former colonizer), personally conveyed his condolences to the Surinamese people, as per the presidential statement.
