Mexico’s Foreign Minister Highlights Regional Unity and Global Challenges
Beijing. Mexico voiced its support for initiatives promoting openness and strengthening ties between countries, as well as projects complementing regional and multilateral cooperation and development efforts during the IV Meeting of the China-Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) Ministerial in Beijing.
Juan Ramón de la Fuente’s Speech at the Forum
During his address, Mexico’s Secretary of Foreign Relations, Juan Ramón de la Fuente, emphasized that “we are facing a historic opportunity to revitalize international political dialogue and strengthen cooperation between our regions.”
De la Fuente asserted that “a more united region is capable of articulating shared solutions and addressing geopolitical challenges.” He further stated that Mexico advocates for a reform process preserving the central role of the United Nations (UN) in collective decision-making.
The foreign minister stressed the need for a pragmatic approach to resolving global issues, focusing on poverty reduction and inequality. In this context, he also highlighted the importance of open dialogue on technological advancements, such as artificial intelligence, to establish multilateral cooperation mechanisms ensuring their inclusive development.
De la Fuente reiterated that international peace and security, responses to environmental and health crises, and poverty eradication depend on a robust international system based on mutual trust and respect for international law.
China’s Plan to Strengthen Regional Autonomy
In response, China presented a plan to bolster long-term regional autonomy, encompassing five key areas: political solidarity, development and infrastructure, shared civilization, regional peace, and people-to-people connectivity. This plan includes executing at least 100 projects over the next three years and providing a credit line exceeding $9 billion for CELAC countries, as announced by Chinese President Xi Jinping.
