While it’s impossible to accurately predict the number of attendees, authorities estimate at least 250,000 faithful will attend, similar to the numbers who came for Pope Benedict XVI’s funeral in 2013. In 2005, for Pope John Paul II’s funeral, Rome received around 200 delegations and mobilized over 10,000 security personnel.
The event coincides with the start of the Jubilee Year, a Holy Year in the Catholic Church, which could further increase attendance. The logistical challenges are exacerbated by ongoing infrastructure projects and strained transportation systems in the city.
