Introduction

The death of another U.S. citizen, the second fatality at the hands of federal agents in Minneapolis within January, has ignited nationwide indignation and sparked further protests in this city already shaken by weeks of demonstrations against the Trump administration’s anti-immigrant crackdown.

Who is Alex Pretti?

Alex Pretti, a 37-year-old ICU nurse, was fatally shot during an altercation with federal agents on Saturday. His death has intensified a tense atmosphere since the killing of Renee Good, another U.S. citizen of 37, who was shot in her car by an ICE agent’s gunfire on January 7th.

The Trump Administration’s Response

The Trump administration swiftly claimed that Pretti intended to harm federal agents, despite video evidence seemingly contradicting this assertion. Security Secretary Kristi Noem stated, “He was there to perpetuate violence,” while White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller referred to Pretti as a “murderer” in a tweet echoed by Vice President JD Vance.

According to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Pretti was armed with a pistol and had violently resisted before an agent, fearing for his life, opened fire.

The DHS posted a photo of the purported weapon; however, an investigation by Bellingcat, an investigative media outlet, revealed that “moments before the first shot,” one agent moved away with a pistol similar to the one shown by DHS.

Bellingcat further reported, “Two different agents then clearly fired their weapons, resulting in at least ten shots in total,” most of which were fired when “the man was already lying on the ground, motionless.”

Local Reactions and Tributes

Several hundred protesters gathered in a Minneapolis park on Saturday night amid freezing temperatures. Tributes and protests for Pretti also took place in cities like New York and Los Angeles.

Pretti’s parents accused the Trump administration of spreading “disgusting lies” about their son, describing him as “a kind soul who wanted to change the world.”

Democratic politicians threatened to block federal government funding, risking another shutdown by month’s end.

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz demanded local oversight of the investigation, stating, “You can’t trust the federal government.” He accused ICE of sowing “chaos and violence.”

Senator Bill Cassidy (R-LA) called for a joint local and federal investigation, writing on X, “The credibility of ICE and DHS is at stake.”

“Insurrection”

Trump, on his Truth Social platform, accused the mayor and governor of inciting insurrection with their “pompous, dangerous, and arrogant rhetoric.” He urged allowing ICE to “do their job.”

Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, a Democrat, urged President Biden to end ICE operations in the city and “restore peace.”

The city remains tense since Good’s death, which has become a symbol of ICE’s alleged excessive force.

Public Outrage and Additional Cases

Public outrage in Minnesota was reignited this week with the case of Liam Conejo Ramos, a five-year-old, and his Ecuadorian father Adrian Conejo Arias, who were detained on Tuesday as they arrived home.
