Background on Somaliland and its President

Somaliland, a self-declared state located in the Horn of Africa, seeks international recognition as an independent nation. Its president, Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi “Tur” (also known as Biixi), has been at the helm since 2017. Tur’s administration aims to strengthen Somaliland’s position on the global stage, including securing international recognition.

Israel’s Recognition of Somaliland

On this Friday, Israel became the first United Nations member state to formally acknowledge Somaliland’s independence. This move has been met with opposition from the Somali government, as well as regional and international organizations such as the Arab League and the African Union, along with countries like Turkey.

President Tur’s Response

In a video message of nearly six minutes posted on social media, President Tur addressed concerns regarding the implications of Israel’s recognition for regional stability. He emphasized that Somaliland’s status clarification contributes to regional stability rather than posing a threat.

  • No Threat to Regional Peace: President Tur asserted that Israel’s recognition does not threaten regional peace or target any state.
  • Compliance with International Law: He affirmed that Somaliland meets the legal, political, and institutional criteria to be recognized as a state under international law.
  • Historical Context: Tur acknowledged shared history and culture between Somalia and Somaliland but stressed that political unity under one state is not necessary, as previous attempts at unification led to instability, injustice, and lasting damage.
  • Constructive Path Forward: The president urged regional partners, neighboring countries, and the international community to accept political realities, avoid zero-sum games, and focus on healing past wounds and promoting shared interests.
  • Islamic Values: Tur also addressed Islamic nations, emphasizing Somaliland’s deep-rooted Islamic values of moderation, justice, and coexistence.

International Engagement and Future Prospects

President Tur invited the international community to collaborate with Somaliland, viewing Israel’s recognition as a historic and responsible beginning guided by cooperation, regional integration, multilateralism, and a shared commitment to peace.

Somaliland has reaffirmed its willingness to join full membership in all international and regional organizations, assuming the responsibilities that come with such membership. This includes seeking admission to the United Nations, African Union, Arab League, Organization of Islamic Cooperation, and the Commonwealth.
