Background on Key Figures and Context
On Monday, Russia accused Ukraine of launching a nighttime attack with 91 drones targeting an official residence of Russian President Vladimir Putin located in the Novgorod region, between Moscow and St. Petersburg.
Ukraine, however, asserted on Tuesday that there is no evidence to support the claim of an attack. The Russian Kremlin responded by vowing to harden its position in negotiations to end the war, which began with Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
A French presidential source stated that the Kremlin’s claims lacked “solid evidence, even after cross-checking with our partners.”
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky dismissed Russia’s accusation as “completely fabricated” and announced plans to meet with leaders of Ukraine’s allied countries on January 6 in France to resume peace efforts.
Diplomatic Developments
The recent escalation in diplomatic tension comes shortly after Washington and Kyiv reported progress in negotiations to reach an agreement ending the conflict. France’s presidential source confirmed that there is no substantial evidence supporting Russia’s claims.
Zelensky emphasized that the alleged attack on a residence of Putin was staged and urged allies to verify the information. His negotiation team reportedly confirmed with U.S. counterparts that the claims were false.
Upcoming Summit in January
European leaders backed Ukraine following Russia’s accusation. Zelensky stated that a summit of the “Coalition of Volunteers,” a group of Western countries committed to supporting Ukraine, would take place in France on January 6.
Preceding the summit, a meeting of security advisors from allied nations is planned for January 3 in Ukraine, according to Zelensky.
Amidst these intense diplomatic efforts, Zelensky met with U.S. President Donald Trump in Florida on Sunday. Trump criticized Ukraine regarding the alleged attack on Putin’s residence after speaking with Putin on Monday.
“I don’t like this. It’s not good,” Trump commented from his Mar-a-Lago residence in Palm Beach. “You know who told me about it? President Putin. It’s a delicate moment. Not the right time,” he added.
“Act of Defiance”
Zelensky asserted that the U.S. has offered Ukraine “solid” security guarantees against Russia for 15 years, extendable.
On the ground, attacks from both sides persist. According to Ukraine’s air force, Russia launched two missiles and sixty drones against Ukraine overnight on Tuesday.
Russia’s ongoing and increasingly intense attacks against Ukraine are described by a French presidential source as “an act of defiance” against the U.S. plan to end the war in Ukraine.
