FAO and WFP Report Aggravating Food Insecurity in 16 Regions
According to a joint report by the United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the World Food Programme (WFP), food insecurity is worsening in 16 regions worldwide due to insufficient international funding.
Key Regions Affected
- Haiti
- Mali
- Palestine
- South Sudan
- Sudan
- Yemen
These countries face an imminent risk of catastrophic famine, according to the report. Additionally, Afghanistan, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Myanmar, Nigeria, Somalia, and Syria are considered to be in a “very concerning” situation. The other four critical zones identified are Burkina Faso, Chad, Kenya, and Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh.
Impact of Insufficient Funding
Cindy McCain, WFP’s Executive Director, stated in the joint statement, “We are on the brink of an entirely avoidable food crisis that threatens to trigger widespread famine in numerous countries. Failing to act now will only exacerbate instability.”
The report also warns that humanitarian aid funding is “dangerously insufficient.” Out of the necessary $29 billion to assist vulnerable populations, only $10.5 billion has been received, pushing food aid for refugees “to the brink of collapse.”
