A Global Phenomenon with Local Impact
More than half of the women in Mexico experience a physical and emotional reality that has remained largely unaddressed: the “multi-fluid” experience. This concept encompasses the simultaneous or alternating presence of various bodily fluids, including irregular menstrual bleeding, altered vaginal flow, intense sweating, and urinary incontinence. Although not an official medical term, this phenomenon is a daily reality and a global occurrence with high prevalence in Mexico, affecting 50% of women, with alarmingly high rates among mothers (86%) and premenopausal women (83%), according to the MUSE study.
Key Factors Behind the Experience
Dr. Alejandra Contreras, a gynecologist and spokesperson for a women’s hygiene product brand, has brought this issue to light. She identifies two primary factors contributing to this reality: multiparity, which weakens the pelvic floor during pregnancy and childbirth, increasing the likelihood of urinary incontinence; and hormonal changes during perimenopause (irregular cycles and heavy bleeding) and menopause (decreased estrogen causing hot flashes, night sweats, and the genitourinary syndrome), resulting in a combination of fluids affecting women’s well-being.
The Cost of Silence
Living with this reality “in silence” extends beyond physical discomfort, as Dr. Contreras warns of severe psychological and social consequences for many women. These include shame, insecurity, fear of public accidents, social isolation, decreased self-esteem, and constant anxiety. Such emotional burdens limit daily activities like exercising, socializing, and focusing on work.
The Solution: Innovation and Education
To address this issue effectively, the company launched the +Protección-V line, specifically designed for the multi-fluid experience. Its triple protection technology includes ultra-absorbent capsules for up to 24 hours of protection, odor neutralization, and a dry-feeling sensation. The line comprises feminine towels, extra-long daily protectors, intimate wipes, and intimate soap, catering to various needs.
However, Dr. Contreras emphasizes that physical protection is only part of the mission. The company also focuses on initiating conversations that have historically been ignored, generating accessible and stigma-free educational content so women can regain confidence in their daily lives.
Medical Recommendations
As a medical recommendation, Dr. Contreras stresses the importance of Kegel exercises (10 to 15 repetitions, three times a day) to strengthen the pelvic floor, especially during pregnancy. She also advises maintaining proper hydration, consuming fiber, and avoiding irritants like caffeine.
Dr. Contreras concludes that to initiate a stigma-free dialogue, we must communicate clearly, use respectful and empathetic language, and acknowledge that all women deserve accurate information and solutions.
