Artist Hugo Gallegos Celebrates 20-Year Career with Thought-Provoking Exhibition
After two decades of artistic journey, Mexican painter Hugo Gallegos commemorates his path with the “Atlas of the Anthropocene” exhibition, critically and poetically exploring the contemporary landscape transformation through a scientifically-grounded, visually profound lens. Gallegos aims to “beautify the tragedy,” capturing the aesthetics of an altered world due to unchecked growth, digital misinformation, and climate change.
Exhibition Details
The exhibition, located at the Centro Cultural Mexiquense Bicentenario until July 2, 2025, showcases various series from Gallegos’ recent work. He employs scientific evidence through maps, satellite images, climate simulators, and digital references to depict urban environment mutations caused by time and human intervention.
Gallegos’ canvases also engage in meaningful dialogue with the painting tradition of José María Velasco, but from a perspective questioning the loss of harmony in our cities.
International Recognition
With previous exhibitions in Italy, China, Germany, and Argentina, Gallegos has gained international acclaim due to his work’s resonance with the deformation of landscapes as a global response to urbanization. “My work has traveled the world because it empathizes with that shared wound—the transformation of territory.”
“Atlas of the Anthropocene” Exhibition Structure
The exhibition begins with the “Contemporary Horizon” series, a reinterpretation of José María Velasco’s landscapes. Next is “The Nocturnal Round,” images depicting the grueling work schedule in large cities, and concludes with “Atlantis,” a series on climate change landscapes.
