Measles Cases Surge in Mexico

As of January 30, 2026, Mexico has reported a total of 7,909 measles cases, according to data from the Secretary of Health. This confirms the ongoing presence of the disease in various regions and puts pressure on healthcare and educational systems.

Most Affected Age Group

The group most affected by measles is children aged 1 to 4 years, with 1,205 confirmed cases. Following them are children aged 5 to 9 years with 953 contagions, and young adults aged 25 to 29 years with 853 cases.

High Incidence Among Infants

Infants under one year have the highest incidence rate in the country, with 46.88 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. Children aged 1 to 4 years and 5 to 9 years have rates of 14.06 and 9.00, respectively, indicating a greater exposure of the pediatric population.

School Suspensions Due to Active Measles Outbreak

The measles outbreak is now affecting school activities. In Jalisco and Aguascalientes, classes have been suspended in at least 15 educational institutions as a preventive measure.

In Aguascalientes, educational authorities only keep schools with confirmed cases closed, without a defined return date. Meanwhile, in Jalisco, the Secretariat of Education reported an increase of 10 to 15 affected schools, with partial or total suspensions depending on the number of detected infections.

Preventive Measures

These measures aim to contain the virus’s spread, which has been favored by minimal preventive actions during winter.

Jalisco Holds More Than Half of the National Cases

The Mexican Association of Vaccinology (AMV) has raised concerns about the severity of the outbreak in Jalisco, which holds 829 confirmed cases, equivalent to 56.05% of the national total.

Jalisco also accumulates 1,636 probable cases, representing 39.35% of the cases under investigation across the country.

The AMV described the situation as “a concerning comparison,” noting that Jalisco had 663 cases throughout 2025, but already in January 2026, it had confirmed 829 cases, an increase of over 125%.

According to the General Directorate of Epidemiology, Jalisco leads the national incidence rate with 9.23 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, followed by Colima with 5.83.

School Suspensions in Jalisco

Jalisco authorities stated that, according to health guidelines, if a case is detected in a school group, the class is suspended; and if contagions appear in different groups, the shift or entire institution is closed for 14 days.

Municipalities with suspended classes include Atotonilco, Guadalajara, Tala, Tepatitlán, Villa Corona, Tlajomulco, Tonalá, Zapopan, and Tlaquepaque. Simultaneously, vaccination campaigns have been intensified in affected schools and nearby colonies.
