Key Figures in Mexican Cinematography

The Mexican film industry is built on a complex foundation, much like its intricate storylines.

This year, the Federal Secretariat of Culture organized a balancing session involving various government bodies and their respective heads responsible for cinematographic activities. Notable participants included Daniela Alatorre, General Director of the Mexican Institute of Cinematography (Imcine); Marina Stavenhagen, Director of the National Cineteca; Dinorath Ramírez, Director of the Cinematographic Training Center (CCC); and Cristián Calónico, Director of Estudios Churubusco. All were led by Claudia Curiel de Icaza, the Federal Secretary of Culture.

Financial and Production Advancements

Secretary Curiel highlighted two significant improvements during the session:

  • The increase in the Eficine tax incentive fund from 700 to 815 million pesos, a first in a decade;
  • A 25% rise in the public budget allocated to Imcine for cinematographic production support.

In 2021, the Imcine supported 205 projects, with notable achievements including:

  • 64 films being exhibited;
  • 17 movies preserved;
  • 105 Mexican films participating in international film festivals.

Cineteca Nacional’s Performance

The National Cineteca reported the following figures for 2021:

  • 1,350,000 visitors to its main location;
  • 883,600 visitors to the Xoco site;
  • 350,000 attendees at the Cenart venue;
  • 119,000 visitors to the Chapultepec site;
