Mexican Film Industry’s Presence at Cannes 2025

The Mexican film industry is well-represented at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival in France, although not in competition. Instead, Mexican films and projects are featured within the industry programs that make Cannes a crucial event for global film industry networks.

The Mexican delegation in Cannes 2025 is extensive, participating in presentations of developing projects and short films, screenings of animated features, and a digitally restored emblematic film. One such notable film is “Amores perros” (2000) by renowned director Alejandro González Iñárritu. The film, which won the Critics’ Week Prize at Cannes 25 years ago, will be screened in a 4K quality version as part of the festival’s Out-of-Competition lineup.

Mexican production company Piano, one of the most influential in recent years, will co-produce “Das Verschwinden des Josef Mengele” (The Disappearance, France-Germany-UK-Spain, 2025) and will attend the film’s screening at Cannes Premiere, an out-of-competition program.

Mexican Festivals Preparing for Upcoming Editions

The strong Mexican presence at Cannes 2025 sets the stage for several significant Mexican film festivals, including the International Film Festival of Guadalajara (FICG), the International Film Festival of Guanajuato, and the International Film Festival of Morelia (FICM).

Morelia’s Presence at Cannes

The FICM will showcase four short films that have previously participated and received positive feedback at the Mexican festival. These films will be screened during a special out-of-competition event in Cannes’ Critics’ Week.

  • “Ser semilla” (Belgium-Finland-Mexico-Portugal, 2024) by Julia Granillo Tostado
  • “Spiritum” (Mexico, 2024) by Adolfo Margulis

The GIFF’s Participation

The Guadajaran International Film Festival (GIFF) is also present at Cannes, represented by its General Director Sarah Hoch and Programming Director Nina Rodríguez. The GIFF will present eight films in Cannes’ Short Film Corner as part of the “¡Fiesta mexicana! – Lo mejor del GIFF” program, promoting seven emerging directors and their short films.

Return to a Key City

The GIFF, which has been absent from Guanajuato City for five years, will return to the capital as its first stop for its 28th edition from July 25-28. The festival will also occupy significant venues, including the Teatro Juárez.

FICG Alices its 40th Anniversary

The FICG, the longest-standing film festival in Mexico, will celebrate its 40th edition from June 6-14 at the Cineteca FICG and other locations in Jalisco. Portugal will be the Guest Country of Honor, showcasing over 30 films by renowned directors such as Pedro Costa, Manoel de Oliveira, José Álvaro Morais, and Avelina Prat.
