Luis Josué Lugo Sánchez is a researcher at the Center for Interdisciplinary Research in Sciences and Humanities (CEIICH) of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). He is also the director of the Artificial Intelligence, Society and Interdisciplinarity Laboratory at UNAM.

The Current State of AI in Education

A recent study by Benavides Lara, Rendón, Escalante, Pilar Martínez, and Sánchez revealed that AI is widely integrated into the UNAM community. 83% of high school teachers, 70% of undergraduate teachers, and 73% of graduate teachers use AI for tasks such as gathering information on unfamiliar topics, searching bibliographic data, designing learning activities and materials, or analyzing data.

Despite its widespread use, AI has limitations. Luis Josué Lugo Sánchez highlighted that anti-plagiarism tools have error rates of 30-70%, which raises concerns about their effectiveness.

Moreover, the proliferation of AI models like ChatGPT, Gemini, Mistral, Latam GPT, and DeepSeek necessitates a critical approach to their use. Simply having access to these tools is insufficient; users must be literate in AI, capable of critically analyzing and reproducing ideas.

Luis Josué Lugo Sánchez emphasized the importance of moving from panic to AI appropriation. He advocates for establishing clear boundaries and protocols in educational settings, fostering multi- and interdisciplinary collaboration, and addressing ethical challenges.
