Mubi’s Premium Service, Mubi Go, Arrives in Mexico
Mubi, a film platform, has announced the launch of Mubi Go in Mexico. This premium subscription service will allow users to watch a curated film weekly at cinema halls across the country.
Partnership with Cinépolis
Mubi Go will be available in collaboration with the cinema chain Cinépolis, starting from May 29th. The program will be accessible in participating theaters throughout Mexico.
Expansion from Europe to Latin America
Initially launched in 2018, Mubi Go has already screened over 500 films in more than 250 cinema halls across the UK, Ireland, the US, and Germany. Mexico will be the first Latin American country to receive this service.
Mubi Go’s Objective
According to Sandra Gómez, Senior Marketing Director for MUBI in Latin America, Mubi Go aims to bring the platform’s curation to cinema screens.
“What we want to keep doing and promoting is for people to go to the cinema. We are an ecosystem of different products and services. We have a film platform, but we’re also interested in distributing films… Mubi Go is where people can both watch films on the platform and experience curated cinema,” Gómez said in an interview with El Economista.
Gómez further emphasized, “Mexico is one of the countries where our subscribers and community are growing the most. Therefore, it’s crucial for us to cater to the Mexican audience and provide them with our curated cinema experience.”
Kick-off Film with Universal Pictures
Mubi Go will commence with the distribution of Universal Pictures’ latest film, ‘The Phoenician Scheme,’ directed by Wes Anderson. The star-studded cast includes Benicio del Toro, Mia Wasikowska, Michael Cera, F. Murray Abraham, Willem Dafoe, Riz Ahmed, Tom Hanks, Bryan Cranston, Charlotte Gainsbourg, and Scarlett Johansson. The film premiered at the Cannes Film Festival and received a nomination for the Palme d’Or.
Mubi’s Broader Cinematic Efforts
Founded by Efe Cakarel in 2007, Mubi has evolved from a streaming platform to a film production and distribution company. Their mission now includes nurturing a cinematic community and preserving the cinema-going ritual.
Mubi Go is one of the strategies employed by the company to transition users from their platform to cinema halls.
“Mexico is a country where Mubi as an ecosystem functions very well, grows healthily, and has an enthusiastic community for all our products,” added Sandra Gómez.
Mubi will also host the Mubi Fest in July, an event focusing on cinema and film culture. The festival will feature screenings in cinema halls, talks, music, and various events.
Moreover, Mubi acquired the distribution rights to Lynne Ramsey’s ‘Die My Love’ at Cannes, starring Jennifer Lawrence. The film will be added to their catalog in the coming months.
