Introduction and Purpose
The Mexican federal culture secretariat is organizing a groundbreaking event, the Original Encounter of Decorative and Utilitarian Art, bringing together over 250 artisans from across the country. This gathering, taking place from June 12 to 15 at the Los Pinos Cultural Complex, aims to showcase Mexico’s diverse array of popular artists and their creations. The subsecretary of Cultural Development, Marina Núñez Bespalova, emphasizes the importance of recognizing, rewarding, and highlighting the artisanal creations of Mexico’s indigenous communities.
Background and Relevance
In recent years, several well-known fashion and accessories brands have been accused of copying traditional designs that are considered cultural heritage of Mexico’s indigenous communities. In response, the Secretariat of Culture initiated a strategy that includes bringing artisans into direct contact with their audience and professionals interested in ethical collaborations. This led to the first Original Textile Art Mexican Encounter in 2021, and now, the event is expanding to include decorative and utilitarian arts.
Artisan Participation
This year’s Original Encounter will feature artisans specializing in eleven different crafts from 28 Mexican states. Attendees can expect to see a wide range of artisanal creations, including ceramics from Chihuahua, fine basket weaving from Sonora, clay pieces from Oaxaca and Guerrero, copperwork from Michoacán, glassblowing from Jalisco, and many more. The event will also display objects such as teapots, jars, mirrors, tablecloths, tapestries, and various other items that balance functionality with aesthetics.
Workshops and Cultural Activities
Alongside the exhibition and sales, there will be 30 workshops over four days to promote traditional art among children and older adults. Themes include “Nanas y Tatas” and “Escuincles.” Additionally, traditional cooks will offer a variety of regional dishes at Cencalli’s kitchens, and there will be a space for enjoying cultural activities at the helipad of the Los Pinos complex.
Invitation to Businesses and Entrepreneurs
The event extends an invitation to business owners and entrepreneurs looking to stock their establishments with functional artisanal items like dishware, plates, glasses, tablecloths, and more. The Secretariat of Culture works directly with professional artisans who are skilled in their craft and supported in commercialization and any necessary procedures.
Denominations of Origin: Not Always the Solution
When asked about promoting economic development in artisanal communities through Denominations of Origin (DO), Núñez Bespalova explained that DOs are not always the best solution for protecting collective rights tied to cultural expressions. She highlighted that DOs are linked to land and territory, which may not always align with artisans’ locations. Furthermore, migration patterns among textile-producing communities complicate the implementation of DOs.
