Mexican Artist’s Groundbreaking Exhibition at Museo de Arte Moderno
The Mexican capital, as it does every year, is gearing up to become the global epicenter of art for a week, hosting artists from all scales and formats, gallerists, dealers, museum directors, cultural managers, and eager collectors. Both private and public institutions are refreshing their exhibitions, many to accommodate blockbuster creations.
Museo de Arte Moderno (MAM) Prepares for Lozano-Hemmer’s Exhibition
Located in the first section of Bosque de Chapultepec, the Museo de Arte Moderno (MAM) is finalizing installations for its upcoming exhibition, “Rafael Lozano-Hemmer: Jardín inconcluso,” set to open on February 11. This exhibition, featuring nine installations by the renowned Mexican artist, is expected to be one of the most talked-about events during the art week from February 4 to 8.
Lozano-Hemmer, born in Mexico City in 1967, is celebrated worldwide for his monumental hybrid installations that blend technology, mechanics, and the audience’s interaction. His work remains incomplete without the viewer’s participation.
A Historical Jardín Escultórico Transformed
When architects Pedro Ramírez Vázquez and Rafael Mijares Alcérreca conceptualized the MAM in 1964, they envisioned the garden as an “outdoor room,” integral to the aesthetic experience. Since then, this garden filled with winding paths surrounding the iconic building has hosted over 80 sculptures by Mexican art’s most distinguished names, including Joy Laville, Manuel Felguérez, Mathias Goeritz, Vicente Rojo, Ana Pellicer, Laureana Toledo, and Ángela Gurría.
Lozano-Hemmer’s installations will now occupy this garden, along with the Sala Gamboa and the edifice’s roundabout, creating a nocturnal experience that reacts in real-time to human presence through heat, voice, pulse, or movement.
Six Familiar Works and Three New Creations
Six of these installations have been showcased by Lozano-Hemmer elsewhere, adapted for this exhibition. Three new pieces were specifically crafted for this occasion, marking Lozano-Hemmer’s first major exhibition since his MoMA New York monograph a decade ago.
