The Importance of Oral Health and the Role of Dental Innovations

Livia Moretti, a dentist and Clinical Education Manager at Dentsply Sirona in LATAM, emphasizes the crucial link between oral health and overall well-being. In an interview with El Economista during the Dentsply Sirona World México 2025 event, “Recovering Smiles: From Diagnosis to Final Aesthetic,” Moretti highlights the significance of raising awareness about dental health and the importance of advanced technology.

Moretti points out a concerning statistic: nearly 90% of the Latin American population requires some form of dental treatment. However, oral health care remains inadequate, with most patients seeking help only when pain becomes unavoidable. In this context, technology emerges as a vital tool to promote prevention.

Real-time Diagnosis and Same-day Treatments

Among the major innovations showcased at the event is an intraoral scanner that not only generates digital models of teeth but also detects early signs of cavities. Moretti explains that this technology allows dentists to display a real-time image of the patient’s mouth on a screen, fostering immediate awareness of the need for treatment.

Furthermore, technology has enabled immediate dental treatments. Moretti details that with milling equipment, a patient can undergo scanning, have their crown or denture fabricated and placed during the same visit. This eliminates lengthy waiting periods, a common deterrent for people seeking dental care.

The innovation extends to creating a “biogenetic copy” of patients’ dentition, including children, ensuring readiness for any emergencies or accidents.

A Legacy of Innovation in Dentistry

With over a century of experience, Dentsply Sirona has been a trailblazer in the dental industry, revolutionizing how professionals work and patients receive care. Their innovation legacy includes milestones such as:

  • Pioneers in ultrasonic scaling, an essential tool in modern dentistry.
  • Development of ProTaper, setting the gold standard for endodontic files.
  • Revolutionary solutions like block-fluid filling, reciprocating motion, and an endodontic motor with integrated apex locator.
  • Creation of CEREC over 40 years ago, enabling single-visit dental restoration treatments.
  • Introduction of the first digital X-ray unit, treatment unit, and electric dental drill.

More recently, the company introduced its DS Core platform, driving digital dentistry, and SureSmile Vpro, a unique high-frequency vibration device for orthodontic treatment. They have also pioneered the creation of a high-impact printable dental arch, solidifying their leadership in digital workflow solutions for clinics and labs.

Mexican Dental Community’s Commitment

Moretti highlights the enthusiastic response from Mexico’s dental community to Dentlive’s event, which quickly sold out its 500 seats. This, she says, clearly indicates that Mexican professionals are eager for solutions, innovation, and tools to deliver top-quality, secure care.

Moretti warns against the risks of using low-quality or counterfeit products due to cost concerns. “We focus our congress heavily on education and science,” she comments, reaffirming the company’s commitment to training Mexican professionals to ensure population health.

Oral Health’s Connection to General Well-being

“Oral health is intrinsically linked to overall well-being, and dental issues can lead to serious conditions like heart disease or diabetes,” Moretti explains. In this context, dental technology becomes the key tool for a future where prevention is not only possible but also visual and accessible.
