Understanding Compliance Evaluation Industry
Have you ever heard of the compliance evaluation industry? It refers to a set of activities and processes that verify if products, services, systems, or individuals meet requirements established in standards, regulations, or technical specifications. While it may seem unrelated to everyday life, this industry is vital for ensuring the quality, safety, and reliability of goods and services across various sectors.
In Mexico, there’s a common misconception that locally-made products are of poor quality. However, this couldn’t be further from the truth. The country boasts numerous industries of all sizes, and most industry leaders are dedicated to providing consumers with products that meet regulatory standards, ensuring trust through certification.
Importance of 600 Normas Oficiales Mexicanas (NOMs) and Quality Standards
In the dynamic and regulated Mexican market, a company’s ability to successfully commercialize its products securely hinges on adherence to approximately 600 Normas Oficiales Mexicanas (NOMs) and quality standards. Testing labs and product certification organizations play a crucial role in this process.
NYCE: A Leading Evaluation Company
The Economista visited NYCE, an evaluation company working with at least 80 industries. From toys and tires to restaurants, beauty products, textiles, hospitals, distilled beverages, and food, virtually everything we consume can be assessed by NYCE.
NYCE’s Laboratories and Their Role
Juan Carlos Flores Acevedo, the Laboratory Manager for Chemistry and Food at NYCE, explains that their labs facilitate evaluation and verification processes.
“We take methods already described in national or international regulations and reproduce them in the lab. Products need to be tested under consistent conditions and methodology, ensuring fairness for all products,” Flores Acevedo states.
During the lab tour, various analysis processes were observed. For instance, alcohol content in beer or tequila is measured, chocolate purity through cacao quantity, tire resistance, textile properties, and the measurement of heavy metals like lead, cadmium, or arsenic in various products. Additionally, bisphenol measurement is conducted—a group of chemical compounds used in plastic and resin manufacturing, primarily to avoid their use in children’s products.
Collaboration with the Sistema Nacional de Infraestructura de la Calidad (SNIC)
These evaluation companies are allies to the Sistema Nacional de Infraestructura de la Calidad (SNIC), which is regulated by the Ley de Infraestructura de la Calidad and the Integrated Technology Platform for Quality Infrastructure. The SNIC aims to coordinate different authorities and stakeholders involved in quality infrastructure, ensuring its effectiveness and promoting continuous improvement.
